Review the University’s policy on plagiarism at http://www.northeastern.edu/osccr/academichonesty.html
It is helpful to teach students about plagiarism to help them avoid it. University Libraries (http://www.lib.neu.edu/online_research/help/avoiding_plagiarism/) and The English Department’s Writing Programs (http://www.english.neu.edu/writingprograms/students/plagiarism/) have developed some excellent resources related to plagiarism and academic honesty.
You may want to copy & paste some of the information onto your syllabus or refer students to this site.
To help determine if a student’s paper has been plagiarized, you may run the student’s paper through Turnitin, plagiarism software that is used with Blackboard. To view a training video for Turnitin, visit: http://turnitin.com/static/videos/bb_vid.html.
If the student has plagiarized, consult department policies or your department chair to determine the consequences.
