This class will meet every Wednesday at 12 PM in 114 DA. Changes in time or place will be announced by email.
The goal of this class is to introduce students to the research being done in the physics department at Northeastern University and to have advanced students present their research. In order to help students learn to give clear and concise scientific presentations, those students attending the class will be asked to evaluate each speaker. The speaker evaluations will also be used to indicate class attendance.
The requirements for PHYG211/2 and PHYG221/2 are that students must attend the class, and sign attendance sheets or speaker evaluations each week. The grade will be determined by the number of classes attended as follows:
0 or 1 class missed: “A”
2 classes missed: “B”
3 classes missed: “C”
4 classes missed: “D”
5 classes missed: “F”
Excused absences will not affect your grade, but they must be arranged in advance by contacting the instructor (l.menon@neu.edu).
Students registered for PHYG231/2 are required to give a 20-30 minute presentation of their own research interests in either the fall or spring semester. If a student fails to give a presentation, he or she will fail the class. The exact algorithm for the PHY231/2 grade, for the 2006-2007 year is:
- if you give a talk in the Fall'05 semester you will receive the following grades:
Fall'06 "A", Spring'07 "S"
- if you give a talk in the Spring'06 semester you will receive the following grades:
Fall'06 "S", Spring'07 "A"
- if you fail to give a talk during the entire year you will receive the following grades:
Fall'06 "S", Spring'07 "F"
