Littlefield Farm

VEGETABLE GARDEN We've had a vegetable garden since our first year in the house. For the first four or five years, it kept expanding, until it reached its present size. Everything we grow is organic, and we are moving to using only heritage seed, which we hope to propegate ourselves. We grow a little bit of everything, but focus on fresh salad greens, vegetables that can be preserved (beets, beans, spinach, tomatoes), and staples (potatoes, garlic, onions). Also, we grow a fair amount of basil for pesto-making, which we would like to market someday. Ideally, we'd like to produce and store enough vegetables to last the winter. We built a pair of cold frames a few years ago, and can often grow lettuce and spinach into January, even when there is snow on the ground.

HERB GARDEN Several years ago, we put in a perennial herb garden, using reclaimed stone from a building-site renovation, which we cut to fit our layout. We dry many of our herbs for winter use.

CHICKENS We also keep chickens, for egg production. They are all hens. We have one Black Sex Link, a Rhode Island Red, two Leghorns, and two Leghorn mixes. While they really aren't pets, it is fun to watch them in the yard as they poke around for bugs and things.
