Morphology is the study of the structure of words and word formation. While the notion of " word" is basic to the study of grammar and language, it remains problematic to precisely define what a word is. All language users have a natural understanding of what a word is, but how can this feeling be captured in a useful, theoretic framework? This course will provide an introduction to the major theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of word structure and formation in natural language. Particular emphasis will be placed on understanding the morphological structures of English and the development of the skills needed to analyze the morphological structures of other languages. The classical problems in the field and recent theoretical developments will also be touched on.
