Although language is an essential part of life, we often overlook its complexity and its value. Through the study of linguistics, we can gain a better understanding of the structure and the social nature of language. This knowledge, in turn, can aid us in our acquisition of other languages and give us a better understanding of our own native language. This course will investigate the different ways in which language can be studied: the structure of words (morphology), sounds and sound systems (phonetics and phonology), sentence structure (syntax), meaning (semantics), language use and variation, and language acquisition. In covering these topics, the course will prepare students for further study of languages or linguistics, and will heighten their awareness of the social ways in which language is used.
