This course examines the history of the English language. In doing so, we will focus on the complex social contexts which have led to changes in the English language, as well as the specific linguistic features that have changed over time. This will lead to a greater appreciation of English, and why it is the way it is today. Students will gain an understanding of the various factors which lead to language change, the general processes of language genesis and extinction, and the difference between dialects and languages.
