This course examines the role of language in the construction and reproduction of gender in several different areas: 1) the construction of gender identities, 2) the reflection of gender in the structure of language, and 3) stereotypes and biases of how men and women speak, and 4) how men and women actually do use language. Throughout the course, the underlying assumptions used in gender research to date will be critically examined. Readings will be taken from a variety of sources, including the ground-breaking research in language and gender of the 1970-1980s and the latest research, which often reflects a shift in the interpretation of the findings of gender and language research. A background in linguistics is not required, but will be useful.
