This course will provide an introduction to the study of African languages and linguistics. It will begin with a general overview of the diverse language families of Africa, and their geographical distribution. The next section of the course will focus on the structures of African languages; this will include sound systems found in African languages, processes of word formation, and the general structures found at the sentential level. The last part of the course will focus on the cultural and sociolinguistic issues currently being debated in Africa. This will include such topics as the different functions of African and European languages in Africa, national language policies, education policies, and literacy issues. This course does not presuppose a background in linguistics, but students having experience in linguistics will also find the course challenging and valuable.
