The
Electron Microscopy Center was created in 1974 as a central university
facility with the mission of research and education in microscopy. The
Electron Microscopy Center is housed in a recently renovated laboratory
complex consisting of six research rooms located in the Mugar Life Sciences
Building on Northeastern's Boston campus. The Center has both transmission
and scanning electron microscopes and the necessary accessory equipment
for ultrastructural research, including darkrooms, ultramicrotomes, critical
point processing and a sputter coating apparatus. The laboratory is used
by faculty, post-doctoral associates, and graduate and undergraduate students
to pursue questions in structural cell biology. The Center also conducts
tours for various school groups including demonstrations of how the electron
microsopes operate.

A
course in Biological Electron Microscopy (Bio
3601) is offered yearly in conjunction with the Department of Biology,
as well as a course on Scanning Electron Microscopy. Occasionally we offer
workshops on various specialized techniques including morphometry and immunocytochemistry.

The
Electron Microscopy Center also provides a full range of services in electron
and light microscopy from photomicrography to tissue preparation and micrograph
production. Our clients range from area universities and medical schools
to biotechnology companies. Please contact us by e-mail
or voice at 617-373-3075 to discuss your project or future electron microscopy
needs.
